Mediatrope began in 1996 as the offshoot of Ethan Wilde's Macintosh obsession and Tania Schwartz's free U.C. Berkeley dial-up account. It was the early days of the Web. Their first assignment was to create a Web site for the Schlage Lock Co. It was one of the first bilingual sites, and was featured on CNN and other media.
The company opened its office a few months later, in a deserted warehouse district known as South Park. The area would later become famous as ground zero of the Internet revolution.
"There was one coffee shop and a donut shop," recalls Tania. Now South Park is home to hundreds of Internet firms, the new San Francisco ballpark, and more than enough restaurants to accommodate the hungry Mediatrope staff.
Mediatrope has since gone on to design Web sites, CD-ROMs, and interactive exhibits for leaders in business, education, and the arts. The year is 2007. Mediatrope's original office is now its kitchen.
